Big effort from bullpen leads Mets past Brewers (AP)

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

New York Mets' Daniel Murphy scores the game-winning run past Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jason Kendall during the 10th inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Milwaukee. Murphy scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Endy Chavez.

Now that major league rosters have expanded, the New York Mets have a bunch of new arms in their suspect bullpen. It appears they plan to use ‘em, too. Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer, Endy Chavez drove in the decisive run in the 10th inning and New York beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 Tuesday night thanks to a stellar effort from its much-maligned bullpen.

Church’s slam helps Mets win 9-2, sweep Brewers (AP)

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

New York Mets' Jose Reyes (7) and Ryan Church (19) jump-and-bump as they celebrate a 9-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers after the ninth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Milwaukee. Church hit a first inning grand slam in the game. Also celebrating the win is teammate Carlos Beltran.

Carlos Delgado had his fun ribbing Ryan Church about his lack of power production. But after two stints on the disabled list with post-concussion syndrome, Church finally had some fun of his own. Church hit a grand slam, his first home run since June 1, and Brian Schneider added a homer in a six-run first inning that provided all the offense the Mets needed to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-2 and…

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

** FILE * In this April 8, 2008 file photo, New York Mets fans look skyward for a fly-over at the end of the national anthem on Opening Day before Major League Baseball action against the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium in New York.

As a season-ticket holder, Darrell Buono spent 13 years rooting for the New York Mets in blue, loge-level seats at Shea Stadium. So he bought them. The seats cost $869 for a pair and will have a place of honor in Buono’s basement in New Hyde Park when they are shipped, sometime after the last game is played at Shea this fall and the Mets begin dismantling the stadium.

Delgado’s late homer gives Mets the win (AP)

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

New York Mets' Carlos Delgado (21) is greeted at the plate by teammate New York Mets' Daniel Murphy (28) after the two scored off Degado's eighth-inning home run off Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Eric Gagne, during a game at Miller Park on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Milwaukee. The Mets defeated the Brewers 4-2.

The shadows in late afternoon at Miller Park can be brutal to hitters, but Carlos Delgado made good contact anyway. Delgado’s two-run homer off Eric Gagne in the eighth inning propelled the New York Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. “Probably the worst shadows that I’ve been involved with since I’ve been in professional baseball, but it goes the same way for both teams,”…

New York Mets' David Wright (5) rounds third base after hitting a two-run home run in the first inning off of Florida Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco of a baseball game on Saturday Aug, 30, 2008 in Miami.

Aaron Heilman issued a bases-loaded walk to Josh Willingham in the ninth inning as the sputtering New York Mets’ bullpen failed again in a 4-3 loss to the Florida Marlins on Saturday night. A four-run cushion was sufficient Sunday for the New York Mets. Now they’ll try to hang onto a lead in September. The Mets’ battered bullpen came through with three shutout innings to close out a 6-2 victory over the Florida Marlins, preserving New York’s one-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East.

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Nelson Figueroa’s recent itinerary with the New York Mets included a quick trip to New Orleans to retrieve personal possessions before Hurricane Gustav strikes the Gulf Coast. Figueroa pitched for the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, before being called up by New York on Wednesday — about the time it became apparent Gustav was going to strike the region.
